Camp was wrapping up, and responsible adults were doing responsible adult things—cleaning, packing totes, transferring totes to trailers. If you’re an adult, you know what I’m talking about: “the fun stuff.” 

We were also saying goodbye to old friends, new friends, and corralling little kids to their places. 

“Brett, Brett—remember you said I could sing the National Anthem!” shouted Teagan. 

“You’re right, Teagan. I did say you could sing the National Anthem. Thank you for reminding me.” 

At that moment, I stood up and got the attention of the busy adults doing responsible things. 

Everyone stopped. Without hesitation, we turned our attention to Teagan and stood in silence, honoring our country as she sang every word of our National Anthem from memory. 

No schedule. No script. No expectation. Simply honor.
