Growing in Compassion: How These Families Found Meaningful Experiences Last Summer

Eric and Karen Haler have known families who have children with special needs as they served in ministry through New Covenant Church in New Castle. They did not, however, fully understand the needs of these families and the best ways to connect.

They visited camp in 2021 to get an idea of what it was about, returning in 2022 as a Partner Family. The Halers were paired with the Davies family, and they shared many conversations with Whitney and Dustin Davies.

“Being in the teaching time with our families helped us set the context for building community and trust,” Eric noted.

Through their experiences at camp, the Halers became more sensitive to the needs of families who have children with special needs. “We are more trained to help and blessed by this journey,” Eric added.

The Halers have continued their relationship with the Davies Family. They now attend church together and see one another at Victory Lane events. Eric and Karen Haler want to encourage others to get involved in Victory Lane.

“Get your family involved in serving others,” Eric expressed. “Your family will not only bless a family, but your family will grow in compassion as you put others before yourself. Our children need to learn the power of paying it forward and being concerned about others.”

Donna and Ronnie Richardson echo this passion for getting involved with Victory Lane as a Partner Family. The Richardsons and their grandson Zeke served as a Partner Family this past summer. They were paired with the McCabe family and the two families enjoyed getting to know one another and spending time at the nightly campfires.

The Richardsons have gotten together several times with the McCabe family, and they look forward to getting to know more people. Donna urges anyone considering attending camp this summer to do so.

“You will get to meet new people, and it’s worth being a blessing to others,” she shared.
